The Image Of The Tortoise

November 11, 2022 faye@media-street.co.uk

In this time of great uncertainty, we are challenged to look inwards and find out who we truly are and what we need. We have been used to looking outside of ourselves to get the help we need but unfortunately that help is not always there, or it varies according to where we live.

In Yoga we have the image of the Tortoise with its home on its back. It sticks its head and legs out to engage with the world and then tucks its head and legs back into its home. It is a great image because we need to choose when to engage with the world and when to return home to ourselves. When we come home to ourselves, we come into the present moment wherein we have all that we need at that time.

It creates for us another possibility of how to live our lives because we tap into further resources within ourselves, and we learn how to take care of ourselves. We can do this by noticing our breath, the sensations in our bodies when we move or when we are still and noticing the sounds and sights around us where we are now. We pause. We have come home. From this place we can learn to live our lives as fully as we can.
